CHAPTER 16

I lost myself in training for the rest of the morning, putting my father somewhere in the back of my mind and leaving my feelings to be examined later.

Once everyone had agreed to work together, training had become much more effective. Instead of just trying to best one another, we were teaching one another. Most individuals in the room were divided up into circles, with Societals from different planets taking turns demonstrating planet-specific moves. Some of the more skilled weapons instructors or fighters were walking around from group to group and giving advice on when and how multiple moves could be incorporated together to improve everyone’s abilities.

Scrounging for food had presented limited success. Shawd, Cassius, and Cassia had searched the last Spear-free area we knew of earlier in the morning.

“Two more days, three if we stretch,” Cassia informed the group about our supply.

That set our timeline. We’d attack the Spear’s stronghold in the housing and dining units in two days. If we could beat them and take over the Hub, all the better. Still, we had to assume it might get destroyed regardless, once the Earther ships arrived. If we lost, or even after a victory, we’d make for the pods that would take us to Canopy. From there we’d be able to detain any Spear members with us, and then use the Tundra Doorways to get to everyone on the planets.

“I wouldn’t mind personally handling Kidan,” Vanya seethed as she slammed her ocala bow into my ax while I practiced a move she’d taught me. She and the other weapons trainers in particular had taken the Riftian king’s betrayal particularly hard.

I’d seen Kidan myself at our welcome dinner to the Rift, but I’d never really spoken to him. My animosity toward him was entirely due to what his actions had caused. Particularly the consequences for his fellow Riftians. I slammed my ax hard against another attack from Vanya as I thought of Bayard’s sapphire eyes, snuffed out.

“I want to say that I can’t believe he managed it. After all, it was right under our noses,” Hok added as he took her place in the circle and gestured for me to drop the ax. He wanted me to practice my projection as he swung at me with his sickle swords. “Then again, he’s always been a more solitary presence. I’m honestly baffled he could get the Spear members to join together like this. His loner nature works all right on the Rift, when we’re independent anyway. But he rarely ever leaves the planet. I don’t think he’s set foot off it since the last Coalition meeting four years ago. I can’t fathom how he recruited all these other Societal members under everyone’s noses.”

He stopped and stared down to see his own swords pointed at him. I’d been murmuring under my breath during his entire speech, urging him to miss me and let me duck around his blows. Then I’d focused all my energy on getting him to turn his weapons on himself.
